Liberal financial architecture – a reply to G20
“A reformed regulatory and supervisory framework of financial markets needs certain principles” affirmed Daniel Daianu, liberal MEP and former Minister of Finance of Romania who contributed to the debate at ELDR yesterday in Brussels in the G20 summit footsteps. “All financial entities should be regulated” he added, “such as remuneration tied to long-term performance”. Concerning the European Central Bank he argued “It should be given more power to deal with systemic risks and early-warning capabilities. An EU-wide system of regulation and supervision of the largest financial groups should be created and mechanisms should be clarified in case of cross-border rescue packages. But EU member countries have to resist financial protectionism and avoid the reassertion of national markets and fragmentation of the single market, which could endanger how the EU functions”.

ELDR campaign launch – Euro elections 2009
The European elections are just around the corner and Europe’s liberal democrats are ready to present to their members their priorities for the next term of the European Parliament on Wednesday 15th of April at Tour & Taxi from 4pm30. In the presence of liberal prime ministers, commissioners, party leaders and election candidates, the rally will inspire and energise hundreds of liberal democrats from across Europe. ALDE – first European Civil Liberties Day
The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) is organising the first European Civil Liberties Day on April 15th in the European Parliament. ALDE intends to launch a declaration constituting a European Civil Liberties Movement (ECLM) similar to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). While there are a lot of active NGOs and civil society groups in this particular field in EU Member States there is no existing platform at the European Level.
