A liberal success at the EU emergency summit

eldr, lundi 2 mars 2009 12:15 ::

With the key input of ELDR's prime ministers: Matti Vanhanen, Finland, Andrus Ansip, Estonia and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Denmark (in the picture with Barroso) EU leaders have defused the floating mines of protectionism during an emergency summit that took place in Brussels on Sunday 1st March.

The European Union's financial sector needs more transparency to try to end worries over further losses, Finland's Prime Minister Vanhanen said on Sunday. "In every country we have to have transparency," he said. "Banks need stress tests so we can see where the toxic assets are," he added.

Regarding the financial measures to be taken by the EU, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip supported the views that the Union's eastern member states should not be treated any differently to other EU countries, "I'm strongly against creating small blocs inside the European Union," Ansip said. "We have to keep together and act together."

Satisfied with the outcome of the summit, Prime Minister Rasmussen's thoughts returned to the national stage where he stated that the Danish government is moving towards a considerable reduction in income taxes as one of its measures to lessen the impact of the downturn on Denmark's citizens and businesses.
