Enfranchisement of Gibraltar (10/12/2003)

RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE ELDR CONGRESS
AMSTERDAM 2003

The Congress of ELDR,

Welcomes the decision of the British Government to enfranchise the people of Gibraltar for European Parliamentary Elections by combining Gibraltar with the South West region of England;

Notes that this follows the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in February 1999 which declared that the exclusion of Gibraltar from European Parliamentary elections placed Britain in breach of the Convention;

Considers that the right to vote is a fundamental, democratic right and urges the Government of Spain to drop its action against the United Kingdom started on 21 July 2003 following the enfranchisement of Gibraltar.
