The political partner in the race with the Democratic Party (PD) of Walter Veltroni, “Italia dei Valori”- the ELDR member party led by Antonio Di Pietro scored around 5%, thus doubling the results achieved in the last Italian elections in 2006. Repubblicani Europei and I Radicali, ELDR members which ran within the PD, will remain in opposition together with Italia dei Valori.
“People voted for us thanks to our coherent political programme, our proactive politics close to the citizens which calls for the respect of rules and of the free market. Italia dei Valori will maintain a strong position on the values of liberalism and try to negotiate a common solution in view of an effective reorganisation of the country”, said Mr Leoluca Orlando, spokesman of Italia dei Valori.
Commenting on the election result Annemie Neyts, ELDR Party President, stated “we hope the centre right and centre left will cooperate towards a common reform programme to reach the eurozone average of 2.7 percent, attracting investments and stimulating the liberalisation process.
