Strong liberal participation in the new Belgian government (19/03/2008)

After 282 days of institutional crisis in the Belgian government a coalition of christian democrats, ELDR member parties MR and VLD and French speaking socialists have reached agreement to participate in the new government. The ELDR party welcomes the strong participation of our member parties in the new government. It is expected that key positions will be occupied by liberal personalities: Didier Reynders (MR), Sabine Laruelle (MR), Charles Michel (MR), Karel De Gucht – likely to stay as foreign minister (VLD) and Patrick Dewael (VLD).

Guy Verhofstadt leaves his office in rue de la Loi 16 after having been Prime Minister for nine years – he was the first one of the European liberal Prime Ministers to take office in the late nineties. Having decided to take a sabbatical year, he gives way to the Flemish christian democrat Yves Leterme.

Annemie Neyts, President of the ! ELDR Party, welcomes the new government that will work on the basis of a programme with many liberal accents: fiscal reforms, more flexibility in the labour market and a reform of the unemployment benefit system
