National elections: Venstre remains biggest party in Danish parliament (15/11/2007)The European Liberal Democrat and Reform member party Venstre has emerged as the biggest party in the Danish parliament for the third consecutive time following elections on 13 November.“The election result is historic for Venstre. It is the first time ever that the Danish government will be led by Venstre for the third consecutive time,” said Venstre International Officer Niels Kirkegaard.Anders Fogh Rasmussen will continue as Denmark’s prime minister. The parliamentary basis of the liberal-conservative coalition government is still intact despite the fact that it will have a reduced majority. Venstre won 26.3% of the vote, down from 52MPs (members of parliament) following the last election to 46MPs out of a maximum possible of 179.
The newly formed ‘New Alliance’ party secured only 2.8 percent (five MPs) of the vote. Rasmussen says that he will co-operate with New Alliance and any other party in the Danish parliament.
The other ELDR party, Radikale Venstre (social-liberals), went down from 17 to nine MPs. Radikale Venstre’s organisational consultant Tomas Bech Madsen described the result as “disappointing”, adding that, “after a very good election in 2005, we are now back to where we were after the 2001 elections”. On the Faroe Islands, the liberal ‘Sambandspartiet’, which is not currently an ELDR member party, secured one seat in the Danish parliament. If confirmed as a Danish MP later this afternoon, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe MEP Anders Samuelsen will be replaced as an MEP by Radikale Venstre's Johannes Lebech, who is one of the vice-presidents of the ELDR Bureau.
