European Liberal Democrats condemn killings in Guinea (25/01/2007)

The European Liberal Democrat and Reform (ELDR) Party is outraged that at least 17 people were shot dead and 150 others seriously injured in Guinea when police fired on protesters on 22 January."Monday's events have shown an unacceptable use of force by the Guinean authorities. I will be watching closely the government's inquiry into the killings. I call on all sides to stop violence and to enter into a negotiation process. Calm must return. Everyone should keep in mind that political freedoms and a liberal democratic system of government are essential for development to take place," commented Annemie Neyts, MEP and ELDR Party President.---------------------------------------------------------------------------For more information, please contact Myriam Cornillet (mcornillet@eldr.org), 00 32 2 237 01 43 or 00 32 485 99 40 56.Note to the editor:The European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party, aisbl (ELDR Party) brings together 50 political parties with common liberal, democratic and reform ideals and is the forum for member parties to develop a co-ordinated policy
