ELDR Family
The European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR Party) brings together 57 political parties with common liberal, democratic and reform ideals. In 2007 the European Liberal Democrat political family achieved many successes in the various elections around the EU member states, bringing the total number of liberal democrat voters to 30 million Europe-wide.

Five EU prime ministers, one third of the members of the European Commission, 75 MEPs in the ALDE Group of the European Parliament and ministers in more than 20 governments in Europe belong to the liberal family.

Liberals at the EU Summit: more technology in CO2 storageChris Davies
Tomorrow’s plenary session in Strasbourg will give the formal endorsement to the “Climate Package”, agreed during the European summit by the EU chiefs of government. UK Liberal MEP Chris Davies, responsible for a proposal on a legal framework for the geological storage of CO2, expressed satisfaction that the deal would "set the foundations" for developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

Reiterating his support to the package and to the CCS, Graham Watson, Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament called on member states to tread with care when bending rules they have themselves set out with good reason.

The thorny case of the number two of YablokoIvan Bolshakov
Yabloko and its president Sergey Mitrokhin are still engaged to support the innocence of Ivan Bolshakov, deputy chair of Moscow Yabloko branch, who was protesting in Moscow during an authorized demonstration against the violations of civil rights in Russia. The Office of the Public Prosecutor accused Bolshakov of breaking the arm of a police officer during the demonstration.

Yabloko considers the charges against Ivan Bolshakov as being trumped up and politically motivated. “This case is an intimidation of Yabloko party’s members who protect people’s civil rights” – said Sergey Mitrokhin, President of Yabloko. The next trial session is scheduled to December 19th, when the new forensic expert conclusion will be examined.
