Over the past three days, European Liberals successfully concluded the ELF/ELDR Liberal Academy 2010. In the first of what will become an annual event, the Liberal Academy was bringing together 40 students from across Europe to the European Parliament in Brussels on the basis of an essay competition. "This is part of our efforts to develop the ELDR Party into a true political party organization," explained ELDR Secretary General Federica Sabbati. The Liberal Academy 2010 allowed, participants to intensely debate current political developments in the EU of crucial importance together with prominent European liberal politicians. Highlighting a few of the sessions; MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis and economist Kai Lücke dissected the ins and outs of the financial rescue package for EU Member States following the debt crisis in Greece; ELDR Party President, MEP and foreign policy expert Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck discussed the students own proposals on future enlargement and the EU's role in the world and the British Liberal MEP Andrew Duff's intervention on chances and challenges of a true European constituency for European Parliament elections was followed by a discussion with liberal group leader Guy Verhofstadt on the necessary measures to lead the EU out of the current structural crisis and how to overcome the European integration standstill. The students finished the event by debating their own ideas of what they would like the EU of tomorrow look like. ELDR Secretary General Federica Sabbati was delighted with the outcome and participation of the young students after the Liberal Academy: "A very useful seminar with interested and active participants. This is definitely something that we will continue over the coming years".
