In its meeting of Friday 18 June, the ELDR Bureau welcomed the election results of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) from Slovakia. The party, which is led by the architect of the Slovakian flat-tax system Richard Sulik, obtained 12.14% of the votes and 22 seats in the parliamentary elections of Saturday 12 June, making it the third-largest party in Slovakia's parliament and one of the most successful liberal parties in Central Europe in recent history. The ELDR Bureau is thrilled to see a political party with a clearly liberal profile, a well organized structure and fresh candidates perform so successfully. SaS conducted an original election campaign, combining a strong focus on web 2.0 applications and traditional face-to-face campaigning across Slovakia. Therefore, the Bureau decided to endorse the membership application of Freedom and Solidarity and will propose to the ELDR Council, which will meet in October 2010 in Helsinki, to accept the party as a full member of the ELDR Party. ELDR President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck: "SaS is the most promising liberal party being formed in Slovakia. I support the Slovak novice to join the ELDR."
