On Saturday 1 May, ELDR's youth organisation LYMEC elected a new Bureau during its annual congress held in the Romanian ski resort Sinaia. Member of the German young liberals, Alexander Plahr, who in the last two years served LYMEC as vice-president, was elected as the new president. The new vice-president is Mette Lykke Nielsen (Radikal Ungdom, Denmark). Matilda Flemming (Svensk Ungdom, Finland) was elected as treasurer. Vedrana Gujic (Mladi HNS, Croatia), Claudia Benchescu (Liberal Students Club, Romania), Jeroen Diepemaat (JOVD, the Netherlands) and Mireia Huerta Sala (JNC, Catalonia) were elected as bureau members. After having lead the organisation for two years and having been a board member for seven years, Aloys Rigaut (Jeunes MR, Belgium) stepped down as president. Alexander Plahr: 'The European Union can no longer be considered political secondary space. Instead, we see many of the important political decisions now being taken on European level, affecting the everyday lives of our generation. LYMEC will make sure the voice of young liberals is there to participate in the debate!' More than 130 delegates from across Europe also debated urgent topics such as the Euro currency stability, internet censorship and the possible accession of Iceland to the European Union. ELDR was represented by ELDR President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP and ELDR full member party PNL was represented by their president Crin Antonescu MP. Both personalities spoke on the urgent need for EU action in the Greek financial crisis. |
