UK General Election: bookies' favourite Nick Clegg clinched top spoteldr, Friday 16 April 2010 11:13 ::The first American-style political debate broadcast on British television has seen Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, “win” the most support from viewers with the Party’s popularity set to increase in the opinion polls from an average of 20% that it has held throughout the past week. According to the latest polls and opinion makers, Nick Clegg was the party leader that best performed, crunching the lead of the Conservative chief David Cameron and undermining the current parliamentary majority held by Gordon Brown. Cameron has the most to lose from the TV debates and so it proved with Brown also putting in an uninspiring performance. Now Clegg’s and the Lib Dems’ challenge is to translate into votes the success registered yesterday and to coherently demonstrate the efficacy of the liberal programme on issues, such as the economy, immigration, parliamentary reform, the budget deficit and education.
