Norwegian Liberals Elect New Leadershipeldr, Wednesday 21 April 2010 15:40 ::
The Norwegian Liberal Party, Venstre, elected Trine Skei Grande MP as their new party leader when the party gathered for its annual Congress in the town of Sarpsborg last weekend. Ms. Skei Grande succeeds Lars Sponheim, who has been party leader since 1996. In her inauguration speech Skei Grande outlined 3 priority areas that the Party will focus on: Environment, education and social responsibility. The Congress also made clear political statements regarding the state of Norwegian politics and Venstre's future role. "Norwegian politics need a stronger liberal centre with a clear political will. After the parliamentary election in 2009, Norwegian politics entered a political vacuum and a stronger division between two blocks. Both facts are very regrettable. Norway needs a new course toward a green, knowledge-based economy and a better welfare society. Norway must immediately take steps to create a low-emission society and make large commitments to education, research and a renewal of Norwegian business." The ELDR Party welcomes the news that Trine Skei Grande MP is the new Venstre leader. Skei Grande has for a long time participated in ELDR events and we hope that her election as party leader will allow those bonds to strengthen and aid Venstre in its political development. The Venstre Congress also elected two deputy leaders: Mr. Helge Solum Larsen from Stavanger and Mr. Ola Elvestuen from Oslo. |
