European Liberals for high level meetings in Turkeyeldr, Thursday 1 April 2010 10:27 ::
A delegation of European Liberals led by ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck (and including Irish Minister for European Affairs Dick Roche as well as MEPs and MPs) visited Turkey on 30 March - 03 April upon invitation of the Turkish Entrepreneurs Association TUSKON. Amongst others, the high level meetings with the political leadership of Turkey and leading members of the Turkish business community in Ankara, Gaziantep and Istanbul featured Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu and EU chief negotiator Egeman Bagis. European Liberals were briefed in detail why Turkey successfully managed to circumvent the international financial and economic crisis and why the country is now back on a path of economic growth. The delegation of European Liberals also debated in depth current issues relating to Turkish bilateral relations with Armenia, the question of Cyprus as well as the draft amendments to the Turkish constitution. During a live news programme on Turkish television, ELDR Party President Neyts-Uyttebroeck also reiterated the European Liberals' pledge to stand firm on commitments made vis-à-vis Turkey's membership accession to the EU. The head of the European Liberal Democrats said everyone needs to keep their promise about European Union membership negotiations and added that Turkey has undergone much development over the years.
