Markus Löning: Armenian government should release political prisonerseldr, Wednesday 10 February 2010 16:05 ::
ELDR Vice President Markus Löning and political advisor Daniel Tanahatoe visited Armenia on 2 and 3 February 2010 to meet with representatives of the Armenian National Movement (ANM), a political party which applied for ELDR membership in 2009. While in 1991, after its independence from the Soviet Union, Armenia became a democratic country with some major liberal reforms being implemented, over the last years there has been a growing tendency towards an authoritarian regime with falsified elections, corruption and very close ties between politicians and the business world. The Armenian National Movement was the driving force in the protests against falsifications of the presidential election of 2008, rallying up to 300.000 protesters in the centre of Yerevan. According to the numbers published by the Armenian government, Armenia’s first elected President after independence, Levon Ter-Petrossian had 21.5% of the vote while the candidate of the governing party, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsian, won by 52%. The results of the election were contested by the opposition. OSCE‘s final report on the election, published on May 30 2008 , also raises some very serious doubts. |
