Liberals welcome EU supervision on Greece and stress importance of common ruleseldr, Friday 5 February 2010 15:21 ::
European Liberals welcome both Greece 's commitment to reduce its budget deficit and the EU Commission's steps to monitor the implementation of the proposed measures. Greece will face the most stringent monitoring as it attempts to balance its finances over the next few years. An infringement procedure will be launched (by the Commission) in order to ensure that Greek authorities are really delivering reliable statistics. Unfortunately the lax implementation of the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact over the past years has contributed to the current situation as the European Liberals also noted in a resolution on the European economic recovery last year. ELDR President Annemie Neyts states: "the targets and rules of the Eurozone are established for a reason. Yes - the financial crisis has undoubtedly brought extraordinary pressure on many European economies. But in the Eurozone, as in any other cooperation, we cannot have single countries playing by different rules and standards than others. Apart from it not being fair, such behavior also risks jeopardizing the crucial stability of the Euro. We need the Commission to step up in this issue in order to ensure that countries are not tempted to follow poor examples". The European and especially the Monetary Union bring about political and economic responsibilities. Not to comply with such responsibilities does eventually threaten the very fundaments of the European Union.
