Liberals welcome approval of the Barroso II Commissioneldr, Tuesday 9 February 2010 17:30 ::
In Tuesday's plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament finally gave the go ahead to the Barroso II Commission by 488 votes in favour to 137 against. European Liberals welcome this new commission that counts eight liberal commissioners who hold important portfolios like international trade, economic and monetary affairs, home affairs and migration, environment, digital agenda; research and development, youth, culture and education, and transport. In view of the numerous challenges facing us all like increasing monetary pressures and the rising threats to the Eurozone; the need to implement the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty, and most importantly, the establishment of a European External Action Service, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck concluded that "a painful transition period has finally come to an end and that the Commission now urgently needs to get to work on implementing important initiatives." In the light of this, European Liberals therefore find the news of a revised and agreed Framework Agreement between the Commission and the Parliament satisfying. In view of the Lisbon Treaty's provisions of additional powers for the European Parliament in the EU decision-making machinery, it is now more vital than ever that the cooperation between the institutions remain fruitful and dynamic. ELDR does hope that this agreement will constitute a first step in the right direction, which can be built on substantially over the course of the new Commission's five year mandate.
