ELDR Vice President Markus Löning and political advisor Daniel Tanahatoe visited Armenia on 2 and 3 February 2010 to meet with representatives of the Armenian National Movement (ANM), a political party which applied for ELDR membership in 2009. While in 1991, after its independence from the Soviet Union, Armenia became a democratic country with some major liberal reforms being implemented, over the last years there has been a growing tendency towards an authoritarian regime with falsified elections, corruption and very close ties between politicians and the business world. In Tuesday's plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament finally gave the go ahead to the Barroso II Commission by 488 votes in favour to 137 against.
