Wanted! A strong liberal commission

eldr, Thursday 14 January 2010 15:19 ::

The first round of parliamentary hearings of the European Commissioners-designate has almost been completed. The liberal candidates proved to be strong candidates: well prepared, on top of their portfolios and prepared to turn liberal principles into political practice.

Among them, Belgian Liberal Karel de Gucht, known to be a principled liberal politician, made clear that as Commissioner for Trade he would stand for open borders and free trade. He also called on the Chinese government to address the currency peg of the Yuan to the Dollar that contributes to global trade imbalances.
Also Finnish Liberal Olli Rehn stressed that the development of public debt in Europe has become untenable. As Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs he would do his utmost to ensure that member states will return to adhere to the principles of the EU stability and growth pact. The rules laid down in the pact are essential to ensure the economic viability of the Eurozone as European Liberals recently confirmed in their resolution on Liberal Answers For A New Prosperity.
European Liberals congratulate all liberal candidates de Gucht, Rehn, Potocnik, Geoghegan-Quinn and Kallas for their successful hearings. Candidates Kroes, Vassiliou and Malmström are yet to be heard at the respective committees.

An overview of the liberal candidates and their respective portfolio can be found here. (Commissioner bulletin)
