Annemie Neyts - The most urgent liberal priorities in 2010

eldr, Friday 18 December 2009 14:07 ::

Commenting on the most urgent priorities that that EU needs to tackle between now and the extraordinary European Parliament plenary session that will take place in Brussels in January, Annemie Neyts MEP, ELDR Party President, highlighted the following issues.

• The implementation of an efficient system of regulation and control of the financial transactions, as well as the setting-up of the External Service of the European Union. These two measures are critical to strengthen the role of the European Union in the world.
• The realization of a European programme on climate change;
•  The relations between the European Parliament and the Commission.
Moreover, during the last ELDR summit that took place in Brussels on 10th December, the liberal leaders (from the ELDR Party, ALDE Group in the European Parliament, and the liberal commissioners) agreed to meet each other on a more regular basis in order to strengthen their cooperation. This has immediate relevance in view of the commissioners-designates hearings that will take place from 11th to 19th January. The European Parliament will have a final vote on the new Commission on 26th of January in Brussels, during the extraordinary plenary session.
