Arab Liberals meet European Liberals

eldr, Sunday 8 November 2009 18:26 ::

ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts met with a senior delegation of the Network of Arab Liberals in the European Parliament to discuss liberal approaches for migration policies in the Mediterranean Region. This network of Arab liberal parties (that comprises amongst other Arab liberal parties also three full members of Liberal International) could be a vital link for European Liberal Democrats to intensify discussions on this topic that already makes the headlines in Europe.

It will become even more important in view of European approaches on how to deal with the demographic change in Europe and political asylum, illegal and economic migration respectively.

The representatives of Arab liberal parties presented the network's programmatic principles for a liberal Arab migration policy to liberal members of the European Parliament.

The document as stipulated by the Network of Arab Liberals - the so called Tunis principles on "Migration and Development" - are an "extremely important and a remarkable achievement", commented President Neyts.

During the meeting both parties expressed an interest to continue the dialogue on this important matter and this document could serve as a working basis for such a cooperation.
