Liberal re-start for Germanyeldr, Monday 26 October 2009 14:50 ::
European Liberals congratulate their German member party FDP on the agreement of a new coalition treaty in which the liberal stamp is highly visible. ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts commented “I particularly congratulate incoming deputy chancellor and new Minister for Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle (picture on the right) for his political endurance and enthusiasm as FDP leader over the past years that made this liberal success possible”. It is a successful deal that German liberals concluded and that was approved unanimously by the party on Sunday. The coalition treaty that spells out the policy foundations of the incoming government for the coming legislature sees many liberal achievements. As promised by the Liberals, the agreement is the start for a comprehensive tax reform in Germany that will not only reduce the tax burden of the citizens but will eventually free the potential of the German economy by deregulating the complicated system that has been suffocating citizens and companies for so long. Apart from the Foreign Ministry, FDP ministers will also be in charge of the ministries for economy, justice, health and international development cooperation. These are key portfolios where the FDP will be able to uphold the protection of civil liberties and guarantee the principles of a market economy as successful foundations for a liberal democracy. “European Liberals naturally have high expectations that German foreign policy under the leadership of Guido Westerwelle will significantly contribute to developing a strong vision for the future integration of the European Union”, President Neyts continued. “It is in this context that I would like to extend my congratulations to Werner Hoyer, my predecessor as ELDR Party President and new secretary of state for European Affairs in the Foreign Ministry”, she concluded.
