Berlusconi's trial: Rule of law or laws without rules

eldr, Wednesday 7 October 2009 18:01 ::

Italy is awaiting a court decision on whether a law granting Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi immunity violates the country’s constitution.

European Liberals are filled with indignation about the quote of the Prime Minister’s lawyer reacting on the issue by saying “Law is the same for all but the application is different”
European Liberals have always been the safe guardians of the rule of law and remain committed to keep up these accomplishments of our political civilization, comments Annemie Neyts, President of the ELDR Party.
Cornerstones of the rule of law are an independent judiciary, equality before the law which means the subjugation of all - without distinction - to the law.
The judiciary must be independently allowed to assess whether the so called "Alfano Law", one of Berlusconi's first acts on winning a third term in power last year that halted all the cases against him was constitutional or not.
