A Fresh start for Britain

eldr, Thursday 24 September 2009 15:13 ::

The Liberal Democrats (UK) gathered in Bournemouth for their party conference this week to lay out their plans for fighting the next general election (which must take place by next June at the latest).

Discussions focused on areas such as climate change and energy policy; ensuring civil liberties; how to improve the state of the economy; and Britain’s role in a globalised world. Ahead of the UN climate conference this December Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat Party Leader, described climate change as “the greatest challenge of our age” saying that “the summit must agree an international plan of action”.

Clegg also highlighted the importance of the European Union stating that under a liberal government the UK would be “at the heart of the European Union” and lamented the prospect of a Conservative foreign policy that would further alienate the UK from its European and international partners.

The ELDR Party was present at the conference with an information stand where delegates had the opportunity to ask questions and to meet their MEPs. With the labour vote having fallen dramatically since the last general election and voter support for David Cameron’s Conservatives still far from certain, the Liberal Democrats really do have the opportunity to deliver a fresh start for Britain.
