FDP winner in regional electionseldr, Monday 31 August 2009 12:19 ::
The German Liberals were the clear winner in the 3 regional elections that took place yesterday in the states of Saxony, Thuringia and Saarland. The party nearly doubled their results in the 3 respective federal states to 10%, 7,6% and 9,2% respectively. Therefore, the FDP was the only party that gained more votes in all the different states. A center-right coalition in Saxony now seems possible. The conservative CDU faced dramatic losses in two of the three states while the social democrats remain at their level. However, the overall results of yesterday evening also delivered a clear warning to the German voters ahead of the national elections on 27 September. It will only be a strong liberal party that is able to prevent a leftist majority in the next German Parliament formed by social democrats, the greens and the former communists.
