Former liberal Prime Minister becoming head of NATOeldr, Tuesday 28 July 2009 12:30 ::
Anders Fogh Rasmussen having been Prime Minister of Denmark from 2001-2009 is officially assuming his function as Secretary General of NATO on 1 August. Looking back at years of intensive cooperation determined by mutual trust with the then Prime Minister, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts and European Liberal Democrats wholeheartedly congratulate their fellow liberal Anders Fogh Rasmussen on this appointment. Without doubt his biggest challenges as Secretary General of the Alliance will be the ongoing defiance in Afghanistan and the future of NATO-Russian relations. As a smart, pragmatic and decisive leader, Rasmussen will succeed in coordinating the complex decision making process among the member states' governments. European Liberals in the European Parliament and across the member states of EU and NATO will do their utmost to support Rasmussen to become a successful leader of NATO. It was ultimately the European Liberals calling in their electoral manifesto for improved military defense cooperation not only between EU member states but to complement EU defense capabilities with existing NATO structures. Together with Anders Fogh Rasmussen, European Liberals will effortlessly work to increase this cooperation, play an effective role in global affairs and thus contribute to global security.
