ELDR calls for free and fair elections in Moldovaeldr, Tuesday 14 July 2009 08:53 ::
On Wednesday 29 July 2009 Moldovans will go to the polls for a second time this year, after the Communists in the Moldovan parliament failed to elect their candidate as successor for the current President Voronin earlier this spring, triggering a constitutional dissolution of parliament and the need for fresh elections. ELDR's Moldovan full member party Alliance Our Moldova (AMN) is calling strongly for a free and fair election campaign, preventing a repeat of the earlier election campaign that allegedly was rigged by fraud. However, reports from Moldova issued by the Independent Journalism Center make clear that opposition parties have almost no access to mass media such as public television and radio stations, while the coordinating Council of Audio Visual media does not interfere to ensure wider media access for opposition political parties. Furthermore, the police allegedly intimidate and harass opposition party members who are campaigning and the Communist party makes use of administrative resources for their campaign. The ELDR Party expresses its concern that accepted criteria for a free and fair contest once again are far from being met in Moldova. ELDR President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP: "the European liberal family time and again has been at the forefront of promoting democracy across Europe. We made clear in various resolutions that reforms in Moldova will be successful only when they are carried out with respect for the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. Ultimately, European integration of Moldova can only happen if and when its government strictly adheres to the rules of a liberal democracy. That condition is not yet met." |
