Bulgarian elections: MRF steps ahead. ELDR credits the NMSS successeseldr, Monday 6 July 2009 16:52 ::
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), one of ELDR's two Bulgarian member parties, came third with 14.47% of the votes in last weekend's national elections. Celebrating MRF's best result ever, the ELDR party wishes them all the best for the next five years in the national Parliament. While not re-elected to the national Parliament, the European liberals would like to pay tribute to the tremendous work of the liberal colleagues in the National Movement for Stability and Progress in the previous governments. A lot has been accomplished, notably Bulgaria's accession to NATO and the European Union. Particular tribute should go to Simeon Saxe-Coburg, founder of the NMSS party. Commenting on his resignation today as party leader, after the exclusion of the party from the national Parliament, Annemie Neyts, ELDR President, stated: "Simeon Saxe-Coburg was one of the principal actors in the negotiations for the admission of Bulgaria into the European Union, therefore it's thank to his strong personality, high political skills and tireless dedication to a modern Bulgaria that we can easily dialogue with the Eastern countries and capitalize the benefit to be all in the EU. I look forward to a fruitful cooperation with the NMSS colleagues in the European Parliament, new MEPs Meglena Kuneva and Antonia Parvanova" ELDR urges Mr. Ahmed Demir Dogan, founder of the MRF party in 1990 and its current leader, to closely follow the two ultranationalist parties: Ataka, fourth with 9.38% and Blue Coalition with 6.73% and their potential breach of the freedom rights.
