The elections have begun – It’s your choiceeldr, Thursday 4 June 2009 07:58 ::
The European elections are a democratic mega-event that can only be compared to the elections in India. The elections have begun today in The Netherlands and the UK. Until Sunday evening close to 400 million European citizens have the possibility to determine the direction that Europe will take over the course of the next five years. The Parliament is the only directly elected body of the European institutions. Your vote gives the European Parliament its democratic character and influences decisions taken at the European level. There are a number of challenges that member states cannot face alone and where action at the EU level is vital. The economic crisis, which is affecting so many of us, is a prime example.
Neither protectionism nor nationalization will help to overcome this crisis. Liberals stand for an open market and free exchange of ideas, goods and persons. This is why we developed the European single market that brought us growth and prosperity in Europe. Liberals know that and the others must not forget it. Conservatives and socialists will not hold a majority on their own in the next European Parliament. The stronger the liberal group will become the more we can prevent the conservatives to resort to protectionist measures that will serve only a few interest groups. Liberals are the guardians of freedom. The stronger the liberal group is, the better we can protect citizens' rights and make sure the voices of human rights are being heard. Socialists pretend to put people first; why didn't they care when human rights in Russia and China were at stake and didn't support the strong resolutions of the Parliament in favor of the protection of their human rights? Are there for socialists first-class and second-class people? Your vote can make the difference. Liberals across Europe, our members, parties with liberal democrat values, are working hard to find common solutions that will make Europe an area of economic growth where our rights are protected. Europe matters and so does your vote!
