LIBSEEN gathers in Kosovo to discuss future development of their region.

eldr, Tuesday 30 June 2009 15:03 ::

In the weekend of 26-28 June 2009, Liberals from South Eastern Europe assembled in Kosovo's capital Pristina to exchange views on their region's development.

In several panel debates they addressed issues such as greater respect for human and minority rights, the development of effective state institutions and stronger regional economic development.

The leader of the host party, Alliance for a New Kosovo (AKR) President Mr. Behgjet Pacolli MP, expressed hope for a better future for the region: "Let us pull down these walls together. Provide our citizens more possibilities, more freedom and more prosperity." Furthermore, Pacolli proposes the creation of "a Common Agreement, the standardization of norms and laws, that ensures the possibility of free movement of people, goods, ideas and capital" in South Eastern Europe.

ELDR Vice-President and LIBSEEN Chairwoman Dr Vesna Pusic MP stressed that the region's Liberals should "go back to their original values and focus on the three pillars that represent the intellectual and conceptual foundations of liberalism: moral and intellectual autonomy; the protection from arbitrary power; the promotion of human individuality."

Parties from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia were present at the conference. The conference was hosted by the AKR party, which applied for ELDR membership. It is Kosovo's main opposition party, with 13 MPs. Next to Vesna Pusic, ELDR was represented by Vice-President Jeannette Baljeu and Political advisor Daniel Tanahatoe.
