Guy Verhofstadt is the new leader of the ALDE group

The former Belgian Prime Minister has been unanimously elected today at the European Parliament as the new leader of the liberal democrat parliamentary group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

“We have to keep in mind that Europe is not a problem but is our solution” he said when he first took the floor.
“In this difficult times – he continued - it is very important to take unanimous decisions in order to deal with the Lisbon Treaty, the new leadership of the EU and the financial crisis”.
Thanking Graham Watson, former ALDE group leader, for the strong commitment he had shown during the past five years, Verhofstadt said: “We now have to work in view of the negotiations for the programme of the new Commission”.
