Europe’s Liberals grieve for Lord Ralf Dahrendorfeldr, Friday 19 June 2009 10:01 ::
European Liberals mourn the passing of German-British Lord Ralf Dahrendorf, one of the greatest genuine liberal thinkers in Europe. “With Lord Ralf Dahrendorf’s demise, international liberalism loses yet another personality of exceptional and towering stature”, deplores Annemie Neyts, President of the ELDR Party. As an outstanding philosopher and sociologist he determined liberal thinking in the spirit of freedom during the 20th century. The sympathies of Europe's liberals are with his family at this moment. With him the liberal family lost a mastermind of freedom who uniquely contributed to the liberal thinking how to protect and further develop the open society. A Sociologist by profession he contributed significantly to the scientific discussion with e.g. his book "Class and Class Conflict in industrial society (1959)" and by having been Governor of the London School of Economics and Warden of St. Anthony's College of the University of Oxford. Europe's Liberals will also keep his memory not only as a member of the German Free Democratic Party, Chairman of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation but also as a former Commissioner of the European Commission. Europe's liberals are sadly deprived of his wisdom and insight for the future but will take inspiration from his merits to develop Europe in his spirit of free thinking and guard the accomplishments of freedom. "Lord Dahrendorf never took anything for granted, and would always question conventional wisdom, including on liberalism, Europe and much else, Liberals will honour this memory and stand up to his line of thinking", President Neyts concluded. President Neyts offers also a personal account on Lord Dahrendorf on the ELDR blog |
