Socialist indecision fails to prevent patient mobility

eldr, Friday 24 April 2009 12:12 ::

Europe’s Liberal Democrats today welcome the adoption by the European Parliament of a report on cross-border health care that makes it easier for European citizens to receive treatment in another member state.

ELDR Party President, Annemie Neyts MEP, commented “Liberals have been calling for greater cross border rights in the field of health care and the work of liberal health commissioner, Androula Vassiliou, has been instrumental in ensuring that the fundamental principle of the free movement of people has been extended to patients”

Jules Maaten MEP, ALDE Health issues Coordinator stated, “Today the interests of patients prevailed over the interests of national health care bureaucracies."

Liberals believe that easier access to cross border health care will help to raise the standard of treatment across the EU. Notably, the European Socialists abstained from voting on this important issue. Does that really sound like a party that puts people first and has a new direction for Europe?
