Fundamental liberal freedoms in Moldova must be granted

eldr, Thursday 9 April 2009 17:51 ::

The European Liberals express their concern about the latest unrest in Moldova following demonstrations contesting the parliamentary election results of 5 April.

Liberals call on all sides to refrain from violence and provocation. "Violence against government buildings is unacceptable but as the guardians of freedom Liberals call equally for the fundamental right and respect of freedom of assembly and expression", states ELDR Secretary General Federica Sabbati.

Liberals call upon the Moldovan people to refrain from further violence and thereby making the strongest case to allow for a re-assessment of the polls.

Baroness Emma Nicholson, liberal MEP and member of the OSCE observer mission expressed as other OSCE members strong doubts about a flawless electoral process despite the mostly positive assessment.

Liberals urge the Communist ruling party not to abuse its dominant power position but to listen to the Moldovan people and to allow for a rightful investigation.
