Slovenia : Liberal Leaders on EU Enlargement

Annemie Neyts, ELDR Party President; ALDE MEPs; liberal leaders representing almost all liberal parties from the countries of the Western Balkans and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn participated at the ALDE Bureau meeting, which took place from 4 - 6 March 2009 in Bled, Slovenia.

Beside EU enlargement in South-East Europe, liberal leaders discussed the reforms of the judiciary in South-East Europe, cooperation in fighting organized crime and the liberalization of the visa regime in South East-Europe.

Our common EU future is the only way to regional safety and stability in the Western Balkans, said the host of the conference, Jelko Kacin (MEP). Liberals should reconsider idea of forming an ALDE working group on the Western Balkans, which should help countries in the region in fulfilling the enlargement criteria in next European parliamentary term, he added.
