Liberal success - another two year mandate for the Hague Tribunaleldr, Friday 13 March 2009 14:51 ::
Liberals have recorded another significant achievement in the fight to ensure civil rights and liberties in the Balkans. Annemie Neyts MEP, President of the ELDR Party, Belgium, was the author of the European Parliament’s report on the Hague Tribunal, which was adopted yesterday by the Assembly with 558 votes in favour. The report calls on the ICTY mandate to be extended for a further two years. "This report is not only meant as a mere protection of civil rights in the Balkan region but also as a further step of reflection on dealing with International Criminal Justice and the problems the International Tribunals are confronted with." In the past the European Union and its Member States have consistently supported the Tribunal and full cooperation with the Tribunal has become a central benchmark in the EU's policy towards the countries in the Western Balkans. The report underlines that the Tribunal has made a significant contribution to a process of reconciliation in the Western Balkans, but considers that the work of the Tribunal is still unfinished and that the remaining cases must be duly treated without time pressure.
