eldr, Thursday 29 January 2009 09:40 :: FDP

In its Europe Party Congress held in Berlin on Saturday 17th January, the German liberal party FDP chose its candidates to represent the liberal option at the European elections of next June 2009.

Under the slogan “For Germany in Europe”, Silvana Koch Mehrin was once again elected as top candidate, followed by Alexander Graf Lambsdorff MEP, Jorgo Chatzimarkakis MEP, Wolf Klintz MEP and – new entry at the top replacing Wim Schuth MEP–Gesine Meissner; then Alexander Alvaro MEP, Holger Khramer MEP (see the entire list at http://europaparteitag.fdp.de/). The party also adopted its election Manifesto, written under the leadership of Alexander Graf Lambsdorff.

The FDP is set to come back strong in the next European Parliament, as Sunday 18th January elections in the Land of Hesse show. The vote turned out as a clear success for the liberals, who gained the Land liberal record result of 16.2%. This gives a clear majority to the liberal-christian democrat (CDU) coalition for the Land government, as the social democrat (SPD) party loses a record 13% of its support.
