ELDR: All sides must comply with the ceasefire in Georgiaeldr, Saturday 25 October 2008 10:40 ::"The open military conflict between Russia and Georgia has deeply concerned the European Liberal Democratic Family,” said ELDR-President Annemie Neyts. “We welcome the accord of all sides to abide with the six-point cease-fire agreement. It is now an absolute priority that all sides concur with the points agreed to stop the suffering of the civilian population and bring the fighting to an end.” ELDR calls for the full withdrawal of all Russian military forces to the lines held prior to the outbreak of hostilities. "We call for the resumption of negotiations to resolve this crisis in line with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, the President added. The international community and especially the European Union has a duty to defuse the volatile situation and should work for an international peacekeeping force ultimately replacing the Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia and Abkhazia prior to the conflict. Also South Ossetia and especially its capital Tskhinvali should be opened to international observers and journalists to document what has happened. OSCE's observer capabilities must be used with a view to a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict. |
