Macedonia: conservatives win poorly organized electionseldr, Tuesday 10 June 2008 12:00 ::The conservative VMRO-DPMNE of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski took a landslide victory at the early elections in Macedonia on 1 June. The united centre-left opposition, including ELDR members Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Liberal Party of Macedonia (LPM) got less then a quarter of the votes. Both leaders of LDP and LPM, Jovan Manasijevski and Stojan Andov, were successful in renewing their mandates. The new Macedonian parliament will have 5 liberal MPs: 4 from LDP and 1 from LPM. As a consequence of fraud and other irregularities in the violence-marred election, involving even one casualty, the results were nullified at 193 polling stations leading to a rerun next weekend. The poor organization of the elections provoked international condemnation at a time when Macedonia is trying to prove its credentials for European Union and NATO membership. LDP Leader Jovan Manasijevski: These elections were a triumph for populism. The Prime Minister was successful in his ambition to mobilize the anger of the voters in the aftermath of the Greek veto for NATO membership. Macedonia is facing a difficult period, as Euro-Atlantic integrations are a not priority of the winning parties".
Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn: The selective application of the law by the state authorities was also a serious concern. It is essential that the authorities address these findings and the recommendations which shall follow. I expect the authorities to duly investigate all reported incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice. I welcome Prime Minister Gruevski's commitment to hold a re-run of the election in all the polling stations where there was violence and disorder. It is imperative that these re-runs are held in line with international standards. The EU is firmly committed to the European perspective of the country. I underline that holding free and fair elections is an essential part of the political criteria of the EU accession process. |
