LI Congress: liberals from all over the world gather in Belfasteldr, Monday 19 May 2008 11:00 ::Liberal International (LI), the world network of liberal and democratic parties, met in Belfast from 15-17 May 2008 under the theme “Our Shared Future”, which saw discussions take place about liberal democracy, equal rights and climate change. The Congress also welcomed many new member parties into the international liberal family.
The 55th LI Congress was held in the Europa Hotel, formerly the most bombed hotel in the world, and a symbol of a new road to peace and economic prosperity.
ELDR and a number of its 55 member parties were present at the congress to further prepare the ELDR 10-point Manifesto for the 2009 European elections, with civil liberties and immigration being the topics of discussion. Liberals from more than 60 countries spanning Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America attended the event chaired by Lord Alderdice, LI President. Among the distinguished participants were His Excellency Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal and Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. |
