Integration or fragmentation? Future directions of EU - Russia relations

eldr, Thursday 15 May 2008 12:10 ::

 On Thursday 8th May 2008 the Swedish People's Party (Finland) held a successful conference about the future of EU - Russia relations under the title "Integration or fragmentation? Future directions of EU - Russia relations". The conference took place in the framework of the ELDR Political and Information Activities scheme.

The conference was attended by more than 120 people representing a variety of interests: political parties, business, academia, civil society and the diplomatic corps (25 embassies were represented among them 8 on ambassadorial level).

Participating in the conference were, among others, Olli Rehn, European Commissioner for Enlargement; Astrid Thors, Minister of Migration and European Affairs, Finland; Henrik Lax, Member of the European Parliament, Finland and Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs, Russia.

The main conclusion of the conference was the need for a unified European Union position towards Russia. Russia is pursuing its interests in a strategic way. It is time for the EU to stop accusing Russia of a divide and rule tactic and instead to get its act together.
