Election in Giorgia: ELDR asks for an enquiryeldr, Thursday 10 January 2008 15:20 ::The ELDR Party supports a rapid resolution of the 5th January Georgia elections, and a scrutiny of the results according to competitive democracy. ELDR calls for all the possible allegations of irregularity to be the subject of an enquiry.President Mikheil Saakashvili won the presidential election with a slim victory (52,1%, a much reduced majority than in 2004, when he received nearly 90% of the vote). The elections were scrutinized by national and international bodies and the OSCE declared itself “broadly satisfied” with the electoral process. The principle opposition, Levan Gachechiladze, the candidate representing 9 combined opposition parties, including ELDR member, the Republican Party, won 25% of the vote.
The EU has called for an enquiry to address the concerns raised by the opposition, notably that the 5th January, the date the elections took place, falls between the New Year and the Orthodox Christmas as well as the fact that during the campaigning, under the control of the government, all the independent Media were censured.
The United Opposition, the coalition of all opposition parties, continues to express its dissatisfaction with the Georgian Government. Mr Saakashvili must now open talks with the opposition if he wants to improve his standing on the international political scene, notably with the United States and Europe. |
