“Russia: A part of Europe or apart from Europe”

eldr, Friday 25 January 2008 08:00 ::

  On 24th January the ELDR Party conference discussed on the nature of EU-Russia relations focusing on EU trade and business with Russia, civil society and political parties and EU foreign policy with regard to Russia.  Particular attention was paid to the economic aspects in implementing structural reform programs in Russia. ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck chaired the press conference with the Russian Presidential candidate and current Leader of the People’s Democratic Union, Mikhail Kasyanov, and Kristiina Ojuland, MP and First Vice-President of the Estonian Parliament.

ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck said that the “Eu-Russia relations can be compared to a marriage. It can be ended by one of the entity involved, but it requires the commitment of every partner in order to function and to remain meaningful”.

Mr Kasyanov
, candidate in the Russian Presidential election of 2008 (scheduled to be held on 2nd March), argued that “Russia should unconditionally accept European values, democracy and freedom of people. This will be the only base to build a strategic cooperation between Russia and European Union”.

Kristiina Ojuland
added the following concerns about the future Russia-EU relations: “Today we face an undemocratically elected Parliament in Russia and the coming Presidential Election does not look better. I am afraid that EU is in the situation to start redefining its relations with undemocratic Russia”.
