Statement by Mrs Kristiina Ojuland, ELDR Vice-Presidenteldr, Tuesday 11 December 2007 15:00 ::During a visit to Georgia on 18th December, ELDR Vice-President, Kristiina Ojuland stated that “Georgia has a vibrant democratic life and must be given every opportunity to enter the Euro-Atlantic structures.”Mrs Ojuland has had the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of personalities, including the Acting President and Speaker of the Parliament, Nino Burjanadze, with whom fruitful discussions took place.
In spite of recent events in the country, Mrs Ojuland is convinced that Georgia will have elections that meet European standards. “I commend the efforts to ensure that the elections will be free and fair. I am particularly impressed by the desire to achieve these standards. We who are fortunate enough to be members of the European Union and NATO should recall that Georgia is trying to meet our standards without belonging to either institution: this should command our respect and understanding.”
Mrs Ojuland also praised the developments that have taken place and called on Georgians, especially those with political responsibilities in government or in opposition, to further spread democracy in the country through peaceful changes of government via the ballot box. Furthermore, increasing freedom of choice for Georgians that allows them to have access to a full array of media, is a vital step forward in providing the foundations for a democratic society. It is important that Georgia’s friends and colleagues in Europe continue to support the democratic development of Georgia as it approaches elections early next year and Mrs Ojuland offered assurances that Georgia is firmly on the track of sound democratic practice and responsible political action by all parties |
