ELDR calls for the return of good neighbour relations between Estonia and Russia

eldr, Friday 4 May 2007 16:00 ::

 After violent protests, Estonia relocated a Soviet war memorial from the centre of the capital, Tallinn, to the main military cemetery on 26 April, earlier than initially foreseen. Recognising that this monument is revered as a symbol of sacrifices in World War Two by many people, the Estonian authorities have planned to organise an opening ceremony for the memorial on 8 May in presence of the members of the Estonian government and allies of the Second World War including Russia.

“The relocation of the soviet war memorial has caused a crisis between Estonia and Russia which has led to attacks on the Estonian Embassy and diplomats in Moscow. Such attacks are absolutely unjustifiable. Estonia should be able to choose the best place for its monuments without suffering interference from Russia.”

“European states should unite in finding a common answer to this crisis and call on Russia to ensure good neighbour relations can develop with the Baltic States. European solidarity is at stake. I call on parties involved to respect the law and to return to dialogue,” commented European Liberal Democrat and Reform (ELDR) Party President Annemie Neyts.

The European Liberal Democrats are concerned about the deterioration of the relations between the Russian Federation and some EU member states, the erosion of democracy and the development of nationalist trends in Russia. ELDR will organise a conference to look at EU-Russia relationship in the autumn 2007.
