ELDR supports MEP Bronislaw Geremek in his refusal to participate in a witch-hunt

eldr, Thursday 26 April 2007 10:00 ::

 Polish MEP Bronislaw Geremek has refused to sign yet another declaration that he never collaborated with the Communist security services in Poland, which could lead to the revocation of his MEP status. He has signed many such declarations in the past and his refusal to sign yet another declaration is motivated by moral grounds. “ELDR is proud that Mr Geremek, a leading historical figure and opponent to the communist regime, has taken a symbolic stance against the new law which could cause problems to journalists and academics. The Liberal Democrats all over Europe, support Mr Geremek in his opposition to the lustration law,” commented Annemie Neyts, ELDR Party President.

ELDR shares Mr Geremek’s view that this new Polish law threatens the freedom of speech, creates a kind of “ministry of truth” and makes the citizen defenceless when facing a smear campaign.

ELDR strongly encourages Polish authorities to focus their energy on building a better future rather than dividing citizens over the past communist era. Legal security is one of the fundamental values of the European Union and Member States should commit not to put in place laws with retroactive effects.
