European Liberal Democrat Prime Ministers support the EU’s drive for a green and competitive economyeldr, Tuesday 6 March 2007 15:00 ::At the Liberal Democrat summit held on 8 March, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE Group Leader Graham Watson, and European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas endorsed the ambitious and binding energy targets proposed by the German presidency of the EU.In her opening statement, ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts stated that “the Liberal Democrat Leaders are committed to a high growth economy combined with measures combating climate change and promoting energy efficiency”. Citing the Danish example of an economy combining economic growth and energy efficiency, Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen explained that “the EU should take the lead in achieving a global agreement to cut CO2 emissions by 30 % in 2020”. Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt cited the importance of having a binding target of 20 % for renewable energy, energy efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions. “To reach a 30 % target in reducing CO2 emissions in 2020, we need to have the USA and China on board,” he added.In favour of strengthening competition and liberalization of the European energy market, Liberal Democrat Prime Ministers will tell their counterparts at the European Council that “unbundling is essential to liberalise the energy market in Europe”. Annemie Neyts stressed the need to strengthen the internal market and to fully implement the Services Directive. She congratulated Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip for his election victory on 4 March, saying how proud she was that “he will continue to lead the political game in Estonia”.She also stressed the importance of the no visa campaign for students and young people from former Yougoslavia run by LYMEC (European Liberal Youth), noting that ”the young liberals are showing their attachment to the free movement of people and are reminding us of what Europe is all about”. |
