Big success for LYMEC’s no visa campaign

eldr, Monday 26 February 2007 17:00 ::

On 1st March, Annemie Neyts gave the closing speech at LYMEC’s Conference “No visas for tourist and students – Europe is our home” which took place in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium from 28 February to 2 March 2007. She told the participants that LYMEC’s no visa campaign is showing generosity and that she is in favour of easier visa procedures and cheaper visas for students and young people.

On February 13th, young liberals from more than twenty European countries publicly demonstrated against the burdensome and complicated visa procedures which negatively affect the youth mobility on the European continent. The initiative is part of the European wide campaign launched last year by LYMEC in support of visa abolishment for students and tourists.

Through this campaign against visas, young liberals from all over Europe showed support for the freedom of movement within the European continent. LYMEC considers borders have become less important in today's world, and that in order to build more democratic and stable societies on our continent, young people should have the opportunity to travel and study abroad freely. With these demonstrations, LYMEC wanted to raise the awareness of the national governments on this problem. Young liberals approached national governments with open letter, asking the governments to start the liberalisation of the visa regimes with the final goal of complete abolishment of student and tourist visas.
