Annemie Neyts to visit Kosovo and establish links with liberal-minded politicians

eldr, Monday 26 February 2007 16:00 ::

 From 26 to 28 February, MEP Annemie Neyts, European Liberal Democrat and Reform (ELDR) Party President, will be in Kosovo to meet liberal-minded Kosovan politicians during a visit organised by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

“The objective of this visit is two-fold. First, I will seek to reinforce links with the liberal-minded political parties of Kosovo – The Alliance for the future of Kosovo (AAK), the Liberal party of Kosovo (PLK), the Alliance for New Kosovo (AKR) and the independent liberal party. Secondly, visiting Kosovo will allow me to draw a clear assessment of the situation in this very important moment when the representatives of Kosovo and Serbia are holding final talks in Vienna on the UN plan for the future status of Kosovo, drafted by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaarii”, commented Annemie Neyts ahead of her departure.

ELDR supports the political parties of Kosovo who, under difficult conditions, promote the European liberal democratic values in this part of the Western Balkans where liberalism and democracy do not have a long tradition. The Liberal party of Kosovo (PLK), headed by MP Gjergj Dedaj, Head of the Parliamentary Group for Integration in the Assembly of Kosovo, is a member party of ELDR, with whom cooperation dates back to 1991.

The OSCE Mission in Kosovo works to establish good governance and democratic institutions in Kosovo. It monitors and supports the political parties of Kosovo in implementing internal democratic procedures, approaching European political party federations, finding a general programmatic political identity, involving all party levels in decision making and improving general transparency.
