CONGRESS IN COPENHAGEN, 2-3 JULY 1992eldr, Tuesday 16 May 2006 16:33 ::On 2 July 1992, the ELDR Congress elected the first members of the new Bureau. Mr Willy De Clercq, MEP, was re-elected President of the ELDR Federation. Vice-Presidents - Rt. Hon. Paddy Ashdown, MP, Leader of the British Liberal Democrats. - Ursula Seiler-Albring, MdB, of the German Freie Demokratische Partei, Minister of State for European Affairs. - Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, MP, Leader of the Danish Liberal Party (Venstre), Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Contessa Rangoni Machiavelli was reelected Treasurer of the ELDR Federation. The Congress focused on two major issues: "Beyond 1992: the European Union" with Bengt Westerberg, President of the Svenska Folkpartiet Liberalerna and Hening Christophersen, EC Commissioner for Monetary Affairs as guest speakers. "Beyond 1992: Europe as a whole" with Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, President of the host Party: Venstre, Martin Bangemann EC Commissioner for Industrial Affairs and Paddy Ashdown, Leader of the British Liberal Democrats as key speakers. Three urgency resolutions were adopted, one on the situation in Northern Ireland and two on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. The congress was followed by a seminar with 20 participants from Eastern and Central Europe on the theme: "Beyond 1992: Political Party Building in East and Central Europe". In discussion with a number of Western experts they addressed the structure of political parties and the way to involve the public in politics. |
